Baseball is my favorite sport. There's just something special about it and so in honor of All-Star Weekend I am going to list in my opinion the 10 best Baseball Films of all time.
10. Angels in the Outfield- This was probably the first baseball movie I really fell in love with as a kid. Looking back on it now it's not as great as I used to think it was but it makes the list because of the fond memories.
9. The Bad News Bears- The original not that crappy Billy Bob Thornton remake. Nothing can brighten my day like seeing a pissed off Walter Matthau berate small children.
8. Eight Men Out- This would make the list alone off of it's ability to star John Cusack and still remain watchable, but it also manages to be an interesting look into what happened during the 1919 BlackSox scandal.
7. 61*- Directed by Billy Crystal he showcases his love for two Yankees greats by telling the seemingly untold story of the great home run race of 1961.
6.Bang the Drum Slowly-Is a case study in the loyalty players have not only to the game but to each other.
5. For the Love of the Game- Brings to light what perhaps goes through a player's mind during what is potentially his final game.
4. Major League- "Are you trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?"
3. Sandlot- Benny the Jet Rodriguez helped shape my childhood image of what it meant to be cool, and it helped me to never lose respect for the Great Bambi.
2. The Natural- I actually only got around to watching this film about a year ago although I had already read the book, and it was a masterpiece. Never have I wanted to make my own bat "Wonderboy" before, and now that's all I want.
1. Field of Dreams- This holds up not only as the greatest baseball movie of all time, but also as arguably the greatest sports movie of all time. Nothing quite explains the lure of baseball like the rallying cry "If you build it they will come".
